Join us as we continue this special exhibit speaker series! Bill Handel, a retired botanist and plant ecologist with the Illinois Natural History Survey will discuss the historical uses of edible and medicinal plants. Specifically, Handel’s presentation will feature the long history of medicinal plant use by the Indigeous Peoples of the Great Plains region. Bill will also discuss his involvement in creating and maintaining the American Indian Medicinal Plant Garden at the Spurlock Museum of World Cultures. Be sure to visit the Museum of the Grand Prairie’s special exhibit “A History of Healing: Infectious Diseases and Community Responses to Defeat Them” to learn more about the use of medicinal plants in treating some infectious diseases in central Illinois and beyond.
